Macramé Hanging Shelves: A Simple Way to Add Style & Storage to Your Walls

Macramé Hanging Shelves: A Simple Way to Add Style & Storage to Your Walls

I still remember the first time I made a macramé hanging shelf — it was one of those “I wonder if I can...” ideas that ended up turning into something I now make regularly for my shop.

My first macrame shelves were made with old fence panel wood my dad gave me, as you can imagine, it required quite a bit of sanding to get it anywhere near useable!

There’s just something about the mix of soft, knotted rope and solid wood that works so well though. It feels a bit boho, a bit rustic, and totally unique. And best of all? It’s actually useful too!

Find me someone who couldn't use another shelf or a bit more storage!

Whether you’re short on space or just want to add something a bit different to your walls, a macramé shelf ticks a lot of boxes.

Why macramé hanging shelves are having a moment

They’re not just pretty to look at (although let’s be honest, they are pretty). They’re a great way to:

  • Add character to a blank wall

  • Display small plants, candles, or bits you love

  • Bring a handmade touch to your space

  • Create extra storage without cluttering your surfaces

It’s that mix of form and function that makes them such a great addition to any room.

Where do they work best?

I’ve seen these shelves styled in all sorts of ways. Some of my favourites are:

  • In the bathroom, with a little plant and a rolled-up face cloth or two

  • By the bed, where they make a lovely lightweight alternative to a bulky bedside table

  • In the kitchen, to hold a little trailing plant and a favourite mug

  • In a hallway, as a cute spot for keys and a dish for loose change

They're especially good in smaller spaces where you still want a bit of personality but don’t have loads of room.

Styling tips (from someone who’s moved hers around many times!)

You don’t need loads to make a macramé shelf work. A little goes a long way. A plant, a candle, a crystal, a photo — just pick a couple of things that make you happy and keep it simple.

If you’re adding a plant, go for one that trails over the side (I love a Tradescantia or a Pothos). If you’re into scent, a soy candle or a stick of incense can add a little something. Or you could use it as a mini altar space — a spot for things that ground you.

Whatever you do, make it yours. That’s kind of the point.

Things to think about before hanging one

  • Weight: Mine are designed for lightweight items, so they’re perfect for small pots, trinkets, or bits of decor — not so much for heavy books!

  • Wall type: Most people just use a hook or nail, but if you’re renting or don’t want to drill, adhesive hooks or over-door options can work (just be sure they can hold the weight).

  • Hanging height: Think about whether you want it to be eye level or tucked into a corner. I like to hang mine so it’s around chest height — makes it easy to style.

Handmade, from rope to shelf

Each macramé shelf I make is tied by hand using recycled cotton cord and a smooth pine wood base.

I’ve got a few different styles in the shop at the moment, and I’m always happy to chat about custom options if you’re after something a bit more specific.

So if you’ve been eyeing up a macramé hanging shelf but weren’t quite sure how or where you’d use one, I hope this gave you a few ideas. They’re one of those small touches that can quietly change the feel of a room — and I love that.
