How to Make a Plant Hanger Longer – Easy Fixes That Work

How to Make a Plant Hanger Longer (Without Starting from Scratch)

Ever hung up a plant only to realise… it’s just not quite in the right spot? Maybe it’s too close to the ceiling, blocking the light, or just not hanging where you imagined it would. Don’t worry — you’re not alone, and you definitely don’t need to buy a whole new hanger.

Here are a few easy ways to make your plant hanger longer — including a handy little macrame extender I use in my own home.

1. Use a Macrame Plant Hanger Extender

This is honestly the simplest fix. A plant hanger extender is basically a short length of macrame that loops onto the top of your existing plant hanger and adds extra drop. It’s perfect if you’ve got high ceilings or if your plant just needs to sit a bit lower.

I make handmade macrame extenders using the same recycled cotton cord as my hangers, so they blend in beautifully. You can choose a colour to match or go for contrast if you want to make a feature of it.

A macrame plant hanger extension made with black cotton yarn, is attached to the wooden ring of a macrame plant hanger, and suspended from a white ceiling on a metal hook. You can see the edges of two houseplants in the bottom and right of the image, and the plant hanger has small skull beads on it.

2. Hang It From a Lower Hook

If you're using a ceiling hook or wall bracket, sometimes just moving it slightly makes a big difference. Try hanging your plant hanger from a lower beam, shelf bracket, or even a tension rod to give you a better drop.

3. Add a Length of Cord Yourself

If you’re comfortable with a bit of knotting, you can actually tie extra cord to the top loop of your existing hanger. Just make sure it’s balanced on both sides so your plant doesn’t tip. This is a great option if you want a completely custom length or you’ve got some spare cord lying around.

4. Get a Custom Length Plant Hanger

If you're still not happy with the height and want something made just right for your space, a custom plant hanger might be the way to go.

I offer custom lengths for most of my designs — just send me a message with the kind of look you’re going for and the measurements you need, and I’ll see what I can do.

It’s amazing how much difference a few extra centimetres can make when it comes to hanging plants. Whether you go for a quick extender, a hook adjustment, or something custom, getting the drop just right makes your plant look perfectly placed — and keeps it happy, too.

If you’ve got any questions or you’re not sure what option would work best for your space, feel free to drop me a message — I’m always happy to help.

Happy hanging!
