How to Hang a Broken Sitar as Wall Art

How to Hang a Broken Sitar as Wall Art

Have you got a sitar gathering dust in the corner because it’s broken, battered, or no longer playable?

Don’t throw it away just yet! That beautiful instrument deserves a second life – and turning it into a unique piece of wall art is the perfect way to give it one.

I did just that, and I wanted to share how I hung an old broken sitar using one of my handmade macramé hangers. It’s a simple, stylish, and eco-friendly way to preserve something meaningful and make it a real feature in your home.

Why Turn a Broken Sitar Into Wall Art?

Sitar wall mounts are becoming more popular – and it’s easy to see why. These instruments are works of art in themselves. Even if they’re no longer playable, they carry history, character, and beauty.

Rather than letting a damaged sitar hide away in storage (or worse – end up in landfill), turning it into decor is a great way to:

  • Honour its craftsmanship and story

  • Add a unique focal point to your home

  • Celebrate your love for music in a more visual way

  • Create a talking point guests will definitely ask about

What You’ll Need:

Here’s what I used to create a safe and decorative sitar wall mount:

  • A broken sitar (of course!)

  • One of my handmade macramé instrument hangers

  • A wall hook or screw

Step-by-Step: How I Hung My Broken Sitar

1. Clean and Inspect the Sitar

Even if it’s damaged, give it a gentle clean. Wipe off any dust, check for loose parts, and make sure it’s not falling apart completely. If needed, you can secure any fragile sections with a little wood glue.

2. Choose the Right Spot

Find a wall that allows the sitar to hang freely.

3. Hang Using a Macramé Instrument Hanger

I made a custom macramé hanger that gently cradles the neck of the sitar while supporting its body. Unlike plastic or metal mounts, macramé offers a softer grip, is kinder to older instruments, and adds a handmade charm to the display.

Just loop the hanger on to a wall hook or screw, slide the sitar into place, and adjust until it feels secure and balanced.

4. Step Back and Admire

And that’s it! Your once-forgotten sitar is now a centrepiece.

Can I Make You One?

If you have a broken or unplayable sitar (or another instrument you’d love to display), I’d be happy to make a custom macramé hanger to suit it. Just send me a message with a few details, and we can bring it back to life – in a whole new way.
